Get a grip in 2015

Happy New Year from everyone at Point S.Traditionally a time when many of us make (and hopefully keep) resolutions for the year ahead, have you made any this year that will make a difference?

If not, then perhaps you might consider adding monthly tyre checks to list of things you’re going to commit to doing in 2015. As the only part of your car in contact with the road surface, it’s essential that your tyres are properly maintained and looked after.

Obviously, the easiest way to do this is to call into your nearest Point S member for a complimentary tyre safety check. During the inspection, one of our qualified team will examine your tyres to make sure they’re safe and legal by looking at areas such as the tread depth, condition and pressure of the tyre.

Of course, if you’re feeling more adventurous and capable you can easily perform these checks yourself. Checks should be carried out at least once a month and should cover the following key areas:

Pressure – make sure your tyres are inflated to the pressures recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. The correct settings can be found in the vehicle handbook, inside the fuel filler cap or on a plate on the driver’s door sill.

Tread – the minimum legal tread depth for car tyres in the UK is 1.6mm but we’d advise changing them well before this, such as at 3mm. To check your tyres you can use a calibrated tread depth gauge or you can take the quick and easy 20p test.

Condition – give the tyre a through visual inspection, looking out for any cuts, lumps of bulges. If any objects are embedded in the tread, these should also be removed.

All of these checks are easy to carry out and can be performed in a matter of minutes. By making the commitment to do this each month in 2015, your tyres will last longer, you’ll have more money in your pocket and you’ll be safer on the road. Not bad for a few minutes effort!
