WET WEATHER WARNINGS
You may have seen recent media coverage highlighting some lesser-known driving laws that could catch motorists out during wet and wintry conditions.
To help keep your customers safe and on the right side of the law, here’s a summary of four common pitfalls:
- Drivers who coast through puddles and splash pedestrians could face fines of up to £5,000 under the Road Traffic Act 1988. This only applies if the driving shows “incompetence, selfishness, impatience, or aggressiveness.”
- Motorists without the appropriate tyres risk fines of £2,500 per tyre plus three points for each tyre. Using four illegal tyres could result in a £10,000 fine and 12 points – enough for an instant ban.
- Frost, leaves, or debris that block a driver’s vision breach Highway Code Rule 229 and could lead to fines of up to £1,000.
- Failing to use headlights when visibility drops below 100 metres, under Highway Code Rule 226, can result in additional penalties.
With difficult driving conditions on the horizon, helping your customers to understand the importance of preparing their vehicle can go a long way to building an even stronger relationship.
